Meeting details

Meet 11.00 by Barnes Pond in centre of Barnes (opposite The Sun pub, junction of High Street and Church Road).

How to get there

By train: Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations are both within walking distance of the meeting point – Barnes Bridge is a bit closer

By bus: the 209 and 283 from Hammersmith bus station (adjacent to the District line/Piccadilly line tube station) both stop at the meeting point; the 485 also stops at the meeting point but is less frequent and doesn’t run on Sundays; the 419, 33 and 72 (also from Hammersmith) stop within walking distance of the meeting point (Gerard Road/Nassau Road for the 419 and Red Lion for the 33/72)

Description

Barnes is one of the best-preserved villages close to central London. It may have lost its manor house, but it retains many of the other features one would expect, including green, pond, common, pub, church and old rectory. We shall see all these things on the walk, plus Barn Elms park (the grounds of the lost manor) and the Wetlands Centre. The walk also includes stretches beside the Thames and the Beverley Brook, one of the few Thames tributaries running above ground.

The walk, which takes us right across the base of the Barnes peninsular, is a long one. And we will be stopping for a coffee/loo break at the approx half way point so that will add to the time. Suggest you avoid early afternoon appointments if poss.

We will be finishing back in the centre of the village where there are coffee shops, pubs, an Ask pasta restaurant and a Pizza Express.

If you are late...

Walk east along Church Road, passing, in due course, St Mary’s Church. If you haven’t caught up with us by this point, carry straight on to the junction with Castelnau/Rocks Lane. Cross straight over (with the Red Lion on your left) into Queen Elizabeth’s Walk and walk straight on down here past the entrance to the Wetlands Centre and ultimately to the Thames towpath, where you turn right towards Putney.

Other info...

Cost: £10 – pay on the day, no booking necessary (don’t forget your LEG card if you have one; pick one up on the day if you haven’t)

Length: 2.5-3 hours approx including break

Toilets: Caffé Nero in Barnes High Street is open seven days; the OSO arts centre café on Barnes Green is open weekdays only (both close to the meeting point); 20 mins from the start point we will be passing the Wetlands Centre where there are loos near the entrance, and there are more loos at the walk’s halfway point
