This fifth walk in the series visits churches on the eastern fringe of the City, including three that survived the Great Fire: St Helen Bishopsgate, St Andrew Undershaft and St Katharine Cree. BARNES     more details           

Barnes is undoubtedly the best-preserved village centre in the vicinity of central London. This circular walk starts in the village centre and then heads east to Barn Elms and the Wetlands Centre before returning to the start point via the common and riverside Barnes Terrace. Meet 11.00 by Barnes Pond (junction of Church St and High St).

WHITE CITY 

This walk takes us from the brand new Shepherds Bush station, through the striking and equally new Westfield shopping centre, up to White City proper, historic home of BBC TV, and then back again via Hammersmith Park, remnant of the 1908 international exhibition that gave the area its name. Meet 11.00 Shepherds Bush tube.

MARLBOROUGH HOUSE    book this tour

Tour of Marlborough House in The Mall, built for the first Duke of Marlborough by Sir Christopher Wren in the early 18th century and now the home of the Commonwealth Secretariat. The 2 hour tour takes in all the fine rooms, the history of the building and the gardens and the work of The Commonwealth Secretariat. Cost £10. Meet 2.30pm. ELEPHANT & CASTLE  

This walk explores a neglected part of inner London which is all set to change following the local council’s historic decision in July this year to proceed with a £1.5bn long-planned regeneration project. The just-completed 42-storey Strata Tower is a sign of what’s in store. Meet 11.00 Elephant & Castle tube (Shopping Centre exit).

FINSBURY 

Although its former name is not much used today, this northern suburb of the City has a long history and a rich heritage. On the walk we see Wesley’s House, Bunhill Fields, the HAC, the former Whitbread brewery and the site of the Fortune, a theatre Shakespeare would have known. Meet 11.00 Moorgate tube (Moorgate westside exit).
